COLLEGE CAREER

Terrell Washington began his post-UIL football career at Hutchinson Community College (Hutchinson, Kansas) and was quickly recruited and transferred to University of Illinois (Champaign, Illinois) to begin his Division 1, Big Ten, education and extending his football playing years.  While a Fighting Illini Defender (#85), Terrell Washington and his team rose to the 2001 Big Ten Championship culminating in a trip to the New Year’s Day 2002 Sugar Bowl against the LSU Tigers coached by Nick Saban succumbing to their first loss of what was an undefeated season with that 47-34 loss.  This 2001 team is the last Illini football team to win 10 games, ending the season with a 10-2 record, and finishing ranked No. 12 in the nation.

Currently, listed as a Top 10 SACK Leader for Career Sacks for all of the University of Illinois players (Tied at #9). Washington played a big role on defense and special teams. He accrued four of the 40 sacks the Illini defense totaled throughout the season and was named Big Ten Player of the Week after blocking two kicks against Northern Illinois on Sept. 8, 2001.

"Special teams were something we took a lot of pride in" Washington said. "I took great pride in blocking kicks. Defense and special teams are the key to winning games, and we knew that one or two big plays from us would give us a great chance to win with our explosive offense."

PRO FOOTBALL

Just prior to Terrell Washington’s graduation from University of Illinois in May 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in Communications, he was called on the 2nd day of the Draft and contracted by the Houston Texans as a high stock undrafted Free Agent.  “Extremely excite to start my pro career with the Houston Texans- a dream come true to continue playing football in the NFL,” Washington was quoted on receiving his contract.

As Terrell Washington was completing his last weeks of collegiate academics to graduate, he was overnighted his contract and signed as an undrafted free agent, was sent an itinerary with a training schedule and weight requirements for his NFL debut. Rookies are brought in early to assimilate in an off-season training schedule with conditioning, training, film study, then they are sent home for a month before the regular pre-season practice starts. Terrell Washington played two seasons for the Houston Texans, at Outside Linebacker (#63) in his first season on the practice squad and was honored with being one of 6 Texan players representing the team in the NFL Europe regular season.
